Hoses of the Holy in the Parallel Universe

More iPiracy

You'll remember my post recently about tracks I have that I'm hearing playing on computers around the office.

I've tried stopping iTunes from running without me knowing about it. I've killed a few services and iTunes isn't in the startup anymore, for example.

But, and it may be coincidence, today I've heard several Squeeze and Kinks tracks blasting out across the office.

You'll remember that I bought these CDs last week and ripped them (not using iTunes) to my hard disk for further listening.

I'm certain that I'm being raided. But how to stop it?

  • Nice link there to your previous story. Because who was with Gazza when he was arrested? Chris Gifford.

  • Aye. Coincidence is stranger than fiction.

Or, as you once asked, is it synchonicity?

  • Synchronicity, with an "r" I mean.

  • Why do you wnt to stop other people listening to your music anyway? What does it matter, if it doesn't stop you from listening to it? Maybe you could figure out a way of sharing their stuff too.

  • Although I'm sure Simon has a legitimate beef against the freeloaders in his office, I think his deeper concerns are with software that installs bits and pieces of itself in your system and then undertakes to open up networking ports for sharing.

The internet equivalent of dipping your drinking cup into a Victorian sewer.

In answer to your original question, Simon, if you look under Preferences and then Sharing, you should be able to uncheck the box that says "share my music". If you have already unchecked this, then [shrugs shoulders], perhaps you're just raving mad.

  • Aye, I don't want to sound like a blue meanie about music.

My objections are mainly those given by Rob.

I don't like the idea of my computer doing things that I haven't asked it to do.

It's also a work computer, and the thought that it is happily sitting there acting as a music feed to about 5 people in the office with no obvious way to stop it also annoys me. It is probably slowing me down when I try to do proper work.

And if people asked I wouldn't mind also, but nobody did. They take it from me without asking, which in my book is a bit like theft.

And a lot of my music was difficult to track down, and I'm sure a lot of it is of no interest to the people who are playing it either. They play it solely because they can.

And beyond everything else you have to remember that I am a cantankerous 40-year-old post-alpha male. Everything makes me angry.

See. Didn't even mention whether it's copyright theft or they should be paying royalties on the airplay they are giving because it is, effectively, a public place. That's because I'm an anarchist.

    Not really.
