Hoses of the Holy in the Parallel Universe

Talking of which...

Talking of being in trouble with money, as Simon was immediately below, I've had a run-in with the Student Loan company today.

First of all, it's not the Student Loan Company any more. The government, like a shady loan shark, has sold my debt to the Mob, or something.

Anyway, the back story to this is that I took out a student loan, early 90s, and started to slowly pay it back when I got some gainful employment. After a couple of years of not making much impact on it, I happened to have saved enough money to pay the whole thing off. I was keen to reduce my monthly outgoing at the time, seeking to pay my car insurance all in one lump etc. So I phoned up the SLC and asked for a settlement figure. Which they gave me. Which I paid.

And then time passed, and I moved house, so it goes, and I thought nothing more about it.

Until today. Got a letter from the new Mob... how did they get my address? I serpently didn't tell them, or feel the need. Anyway, the letter is all about how I owe them £58, or something, and to please phone them within 7 days or they send Vinny and Marco round to break my legs.

Turns out that their settlement figure failed to include one monthly payment, which was around £41. So they've just been adding interest to the £41 ever since. Of course, I was absolutely steaming about this. I FUCKING ASKED THEM FOR THE SETTLEMENT FIGURE and paid it in good faith, after all. FUCKERS.

Anyway, I aggressively proposed paying the £41 and told them to write off the interest. I wanted to hold out and not pay any of it, but - in spite of the fact that it would cost them more money than it would raise - I know they would pursue me to the gates of hell, because that is the way of this world. So I paid the £41, and he's going to speak to his supervisor about the interest. What's the betting they try and squeeze that out of me as well? Or that I get another letter in 5 years saying I owe £72, which is the £17 interest, plus interest?

I shit on this world.

  • if it's any consolation, you're not alone. i'm currently being shafted by the tax credits people. we were told to claim for tax credits, even though we earned too much, but we claimed anyway and they sent us some money, which we gratefully spunked away on fripperies. now they've realised they made a mistake and they want their money back. Even though it was THEIR MISTAKE. cnnts, the lot of them.
