scabs

i would be interested to see which bbc employees crossed the picket lines yesterday. i believe terry wogan is one, but don't sue me if not. i want to know who they are, so i can mutter "scab" under my breath whenever they are on telly.

reminds me of my recently departed grandmother, who could be depended on to badmouth leslie 'dirty den' grantham when he appeared on the screen, on account of he killed a german taxi driver when he was a young lad in the army and should not be allowed a career in tv.

  • Wogan, yes. Also Sheilagh Fogerty on Five Live. And Milton Wordsworth, though not Shelley.

  • I knew I'd spelt Shelagh Fogarty wrong, but you can't edit comments, dagnabit.

There's a write up on The Guardian Media site asking if Fogarty was "hung out to dry" by BBC bosses:

"She turned up for work as normal yesterday, setting herself apart from all her other colleagues including co-host Nicky Campbell, who stayed away from work in support of the strike.

Other more senior colleagues such as Jeremy Paxman and John Humphrys didn't face such a dilemma even if they did empathise with the strikers. It was clear last week that Newsnight was not going to get on air, meaning Paxman and other colleagues didn't have to show one way or the other.

Similarly with Today anchor Humphrys. But it is noteworthy that BBC bosses phoned him at home on Sunday night telling him not to bother coming in, thus sparing him a difficult decision over whether or not to cross the picket lines.

This was a significant luxury not afforded to Fogarty. She turned up for work as normal yesterday - but for what avail? To loyally put out a half-baked programme and get branded a scab to boot?"

It is an interesting question. There wasn't really a Breakfast to present, but they had her in reading a bulletin - and then played repeats. So they could have called her at home and said not to bother. Interesting to see how long she lasts now. And did Nicky Campbell get that phone call?
